CENTRAL SADDLERY (http://www.centralsaddlery.com), a family run Scottish equestrian business was established in 1976. Originally selling equestrian products from our rural home base, we also attended numerous Equestrian & Agricultural Shows with a purpose built Show Unit. Over the years we continued to expand and moved to our present site in 1983.
Winter 2010/11 has certainly been one to remember for a lot of people. I know that our local community in Central Scotland have been hit extremely hard by the brutal weather of recent months, the horse owner very much included! Our delivery team were pushed hard trying to keep supply of hay and feed going to the local yards. Sometimes this entailed sending our JCB out to clear the way in desperate circumstances. Some of these issues could have been easily avoided with the correct planning so I thought I’d give a few hints and tips on how to prepare for the bad weather. The main problem we came across was a lack of adequate storage for fodder. It’s one thing to trudge through 3ft of snow carrying a bag of mix but when it’s 50 bales of hay that is needed it all becomes a bit trickier. The best thing I could recommend is to work out how much hay or haylage you need for the year and get it in early. If you can’t fit a year’s supply in you should try to have a month’s worth in reserve. This will both save you money and save a whole lot of stress if things go pear shaped weather wise.Another good tip is to get some old electric fencing posts and place them at the sides of your drive to act like snow poles. This means when you bribe a passing JCB driver to clear you drive he will have some point of reference to work from. There are quite a few people round about who realised when the snow finally melted that they had been driving across their lawn or that half their garden is now in the big pile of snow!I hope this helps.
